Environmental Science Opportunities for Teachers

Hot Science - Cool Talks Outreach Lecture Series
This program allows leading researchers to communicate their research to the public, and in particular to the K-12 community. The talks are educational experiences with interactive activities, lively discussion, and a live webcast.

GK-12 Program: An Integrated Approach to K-12 Education
The GK-12 Program provides support for eight graduate fellows each year to serve as resources for K-12 science students and teachers. The program emphasizes collaboration in K-12 classrooms and in field projects on Texas watersheds, estuaries and ocean-going vessels.

Texas Natural Science Center: Exploring Evolution for Educators
Explore Evolution is a 13-day professional development program in which educators work with University of Texas scientists and science educators to investigate concepts of evolution utilizing techniques from DNA analysis to interpreting the fossil record. This workshop includes participation in an educational research study on teaching and learning topics in evolutionary biology.

UT Marine Science Institute: Teacher Workshops
Teacher workshops are aimed at upgrading the proficiency of classroom teachers at all levels by the introduction of marine science topics and techniques into the curriculum of all subjects, from science to art and history. By participating in the weekend workshops teachers will gain practical experience with shipboard collecting gear, as well as exposure to current research problems and methods and techniques used by researchers to gain a better understanding of the marine environment.

McDonald Observatory Teacher Workshops
McDonald Observatory offers a unique setting for teacher workshops: the Observatory and Visitors Center in the Davis Mountains of West Texas. Not only will you do inquiry-based activities aligned with science and mathematics TEKS and TAKS, you will practice your new astronomy skills under the Observatory’s dark skies, weather permitting, and partner with trained and nationally recognized astronomy educators.

Texas Space Grant Consortium: K-12 Educational Programs
TSGC is currently soliciting proposals that are designed to enhance students understanding of the benefits of space exploration and space based research. Texas Space Grant Consortium anticipates making 4 to 7 new awards per year. The maximum individual award will be $15,000 with a period of performance up to 24 months. Awards are overhead free.

Texas Space Grant Consortium: Professional Development Workshop: LiftOff
This aerospace workshop series, a week-long professional development training for teachers, emphasizes science, mathematics, and technology learning experiences by incorporating a space science theme supported by NASA missions. Teacher participants are provided with information, materials, and experiences through hands-on activities and field trips that will promote space science and enrichment activities for themselves and others.
