The NWRI Fellowship Program
Any graduate student developing water-related research at a U.S. university during the 2007-2008 school year is eligible to apply for the two-year, $20,000-a-year award. Advanced Biology Training Course in Antarctica
"Integrative Biology and Adaptation of Antarctic Marine Organisms"
This National Science Foundation sponsored course will be held in Antarctica
at the United States' McMurdo Station for one month, starting January 2006.
This is an international course, open to all nationalities. Applications are invited
from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other research scientists
who are interested in the study of extreme environments and the biology
of Antarctic organisms. The course will accommodate up to 20 students.
Full scholarships are available to each student accepted into the course to
cover the cost of travel from home institution to Antarctica, and room and
board while in Antarctica. The emphasis of the Antarctic Biology Course is
on integrative biology, with laboratory- and field-based projects focused
on adaptations in an extreme polar environment. A diverse teaching faculty
will offer students the possibility of working on a wide range of Antarctic organisms
(bacteria, algae, invertebrates, and fish), as well as working at several
different levels of biological analysis (molecular biology, physiological ecology,
species diversity, and evolution). Deadline for receipt of completed applications is
September 1, 2005.

DISCCRS, an initiative funded by NSF and NASA, seeks to jump-start the process. Bullard Fellowships in Forest Research and Study (Harvard) - The purpose of this fellowship program is to support advanced research and study by persons who show promise of making an important contribution, either as scholars or administrators, to forestry defined in its broadest sense as the human use of forested environments. The field is broadly construed to encompass the wide array of forestry-related subjects from biology to earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, or law. Application deadline is February 1, 2005.
Postdoctoral Earth and Planetary Sciences Fellowship (Smithsonian) - The National Air and Space Museum has established the Postdoctoral Earth and Planetary Sciences Fellowship to support scientific research in this area. Scientists in the Center for Earth and Planetary Sciences concentrate on geologic and geophysical research of the Earth and other terrestrial planets, using remote sensing data obtained from Earth-orbiting and interplanetary spacecraft. Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce Fellowships - The Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce is located on the east coast of central Florida, near Fort Pierce, on the Indian River Lagoon. Situated in a biogeographical transition zone, there is access to both tropical and temperate biota and to the offshore Florida current with its abundance of long-distance larvae and rich plankton. Habitats include mangroves, sea-grass beds and mud flats of the Indian River lagoon, as well as the sandy beaches and warm reefs of the oceanic coast and the sandy plains and coquinoid limestone ledges of the offshore continental shelf. Postdoc Fellowships (Smithsonian) - Fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution provide students and scholars with opportunities to pursue independent research projects in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff. Persons interested in conducting research at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory should apply to that bureau directly. Applicants to the fellowship programs must propose research in a field pursued at the Smithsonian. A specific and detailed research proposal indicating why the Smithsonian is an appropriate place to conduct the studies proposed is required. Fellowships are only offered to support research within Smithsonian facilities or programs. Fellows are expected to spend most of their tenure in residence at the Smithsonian, except when arrangements are made for periods of field work or research travel.
