Position Title: Paid Internship, Environmental Affairs
Location: Austin, TX
Position Summary:
This position will assist the Chief Environmental Officer and Environmental Affairs Manager in the areas of renewable energy procurement, environmental claims and messaging, new product development and market research. This position requires an uncommon individual: one who has strong quantitative and analytical skills; who is able to do solitary research and who is adept in working collaboratively under pressure; who is passionate and idealistic about a healthy environment and who is practical in approach.
Duties:
- Perform research and analysis to assess and understand the environmental implications of electric generation and Green Mountain Energy Company’s specific product offerings.
- Work with environmental affairs manager to maintain nationwide data base of tag suppliers and associated national price curves.
- Support product substantiation process to ensure accuracy and integrity of company’s consumer products in regional markets.
- Work with in-house legal counsel and marketing department to ensure compliance with state and federal law and regulations governing both electricity markets and marketing of consumer products.
- Develop and advocate environmental policy for the company. Research, analyze, and draft key policies and corporate positions on environmental and regulatory matters, including: greenhouse-gas and air-pollution regulation and reporting, renewable-energy credit trading, and a variety of environmentally oriented business practices (like standards for recycled paper).
- Provide research and assistance writing the Company’s annual corporate environmental report, according to CERES/ GRI sustainability reporting guidelines.
Experiences, skills, and education needed:
- Bachelors degree or last year of undergraduate program in environmental sciences, environmental policy, or related fields preferred.
- Ability to provide high quality quantitative and analytical support in very short timeframes.
- Ability to research a wide variety of issues pertaining to the confluence of energy and environmental markets.
- Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Frontpage, Outlook)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Congenial and tough-minded.
