If you are considering a career in environmental work, the following internship is a wonderful opportunity for you!
Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio is offering, for the first time, a paid internship to junior or senior level life science students who are interested in a career in environmental work, with a GPA of 3.5 or better. Housing is provided, and the successful candidate will have the chance to accompany the Principal Investigator to an environmental conference in June! Be sure to write a formal letter requesting consideration, and attach your resume. Address the letter to Ms. Edith Thompson at edith.thompson@swri.org.
In your letter, you should let the reader know your level of experience/interest in learning all the responsibilities and activities mentioned. You need not have any experience beyond class work. You should however, make an effort to find out what, for example, "hyperspectral imagery" is, or what the software ERDAS Imagine or ENVI does, before you write.
Job Title: Student Scientist
Description: SwRI is looking for a team member of an interdisciplinary project focusing on land cover classifications and biophysical modeling for remote sensing applications related to complex volcanic terrains. The responsibilities involve field identification and mapping of plant/vegetation types in arid areas, and field support in collection spectral data using a portable spectroradiometer. This position requires performance of computer analysis of multispectral and hyperspectral imagery using ERDAS Imagine and/or ENVI software. GIS experience is a plus.
