 Texas Waters Workshop

On November 22, the GK-12 teachers and fellows participated in a content enrichment workshop entitled "Texas Waters," that was a follow up to Dr. Sharp's Outreach lecture on the Edwards Aquifer. The purpose of the workshop was to enrich the teachers' knowledge about aquifers and to allow the teachers the opportunity to enhance their classroom activities. In the morning session, we began the workshop by giving an overview of Microsoft PowerPoint and offering some helpful hints. Each teacher was provided with Dr. Sharp's Outreach lecture CD to use as a reference.

Information about the water cycle, groundwater and aquifers were presented to the teachers by Bruce Hall (program coordinator), Lance Christian (graduate student in hydrogeology) and Nico Hauwert (graduate student in hydrogeology and hydrogeologist with Barton Springs Edwards Aqifer Conservation District). The teachers were given time to work on their PowerPoint presentations and incorporate images from either Dr. Sharp's CD or from other resources. Dr. Sharp made a visit to the workshop during this time. In the weeks prior to the workshop, over fifty lesson/labs pertaining to water and hydrogeology were reviewed and compiled by the Fellows and Bruce Hall.

These lessons as well as each teacher's PowerPoint presentation were saved onto a CD for each teacher to take with them at the end of the workshop. The afternoon session was held in a geology lab and the teachers and Fellows participated in a lab/lesson Share-a-thon. Each teacher presented one of their favorite lessons about water to the group and provided handouts for everyone to take with them. Several teachers made the comment that they were much more likely to use a lesson that had already been tested by another teacher, and they benefited by seeing it demonstrated. Dr. Banner demonstrated an activity concerning groundwater usage vs. recharge over time.
