The Edwards Aquifer Field Workshop was held on February 15, 2003 and extended the content covered in the Texas Waters Workshop. The goals of the workshop were: to examine the strata and depositional environments of the Cretaceous carbonate rocks of central Texas and to examine the hydrogeologic characteristics of the strata that comprise part of the Edwards Aquifer.
K-12 educators and college students met Dr. Jay Banner (Director, Environmental Science Institute, and Professor, Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin), Dr. Jack Sharp (Professor, Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin) and Mr. Nico Hauwert (Hydrogeologist, City of Austin Watershed Protection and Development Review Dept.) at Barton Springs Pool to begin the trip. The workshop was held in the field at points of recharge and discharge in urbanized areas of the Edwards aquifer in south Austin. Surface features related to the aquifer, related fossils and associated woody plants were identified.
Educators were trained to lead their own field trip to expose their students to the excitement of scientific discovery in these natural settings. Teachers were given a field notebook containing detailed information about each stop, maps and photos at the beginning of the workshop. Teachers were later provided with a CD-ROM containing photographs, related publications, geological information about each stop, topography maps, directions to sites and support materials. Thirteen teachers from area public schools and Austin Community College and three GK-12 Fellows were in attendance.
