 5e Workshop

The 5E Model Approach to Lesson Development

James Barufaldi and Lynn Kirby held a workshop exploring the 5E (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate) model of lesson development with GK-12 teachers and fellows. The workshoop was Saturday, January, 31. Participants were walked through a lesson where they made hypotheses regarding the time for a suspended weight to oscillate on a string – but this was presented in a more practical way: given a grandfather clock that was not keep time properly, how can they modify the pendulum to fix it. They then experimented with adjusting the variables, recording the resulting values and presenting data.

Presenters:
James Barufaldi, Ruben E. Hinojosa Regents Professor in Education And Distinguished Teaching Professor
Lynn Kirby, Teacher, Kealing Middle School
