TOWARDS ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY:

AN UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP FOR
INTERDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY IN BRAZIL

Environmental Science Institute and Institute for Latin American Studies

The Environmental Science Institute and the Institute for Latin American Studies at University of Texas at Austin have teamed up to offer an interdisciplinary fellowship for environmental study in Brazil. The fellowship is part of an exchange program that provides U.S. and Brazilian students with one-semester fellowships to study and learn from the perspective of the other nation. The focus of study is on the complexity of issues that impact efforts to devise and sustain environmental policy within each participating nation as well as across borders. In the real world a very broad range of issues affect the environment, and so students may apply to work on a wide range of topics including economic, business, political, legal, ethical, cultural, social, scientific, educational, and health issues.

The fellowships are offered through a four-university partnership between Pace University of New York, and two Brazilian universities - the National University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre and the National University of Para (UFPA) in Belem.

Students who receive fellowships will be expected to arrive in the host country for one month of intensive language training followed by one semester of academic study, a total of approximately five months. Each year will begin with the Brazilian fellows coming to UT Austin and Pace University to participate in a robust curriculum that will include seminars and collaborative research projects alongside the U.S. fellows. In the spring, the roles will be reversed, with the U.S. students traveling to Brazil to study alongside their returning Brazilian counterparts. The students will also have opportunities to participate in externships provided by the Lawyers for a Green Planet Institute and the Water Keeper Alliance.

The fellowships are open to UT-Austin or Pace University students, both undergraduate and graduate. U.S. students must have training in Portuguese before receiving the fellowship. Spanish speaking students are encouraged to apply for the fellowship in conjunction with taking Portuguese at the UT Austin Department of Spanish and Portuguese. For more information contact Vivan Flanzer (vflanzer@mail.utexas.edu). Also see the application for more information about language study requirements.

Fellowships awarded to US students are for $4000, an amount that should cover travel costs and a small stipend for living expenses in the host country. Students will pay tuition for their home university during their semester abroad and will not be required to pay any tuition or fees to the host university.

The program will sponsor a minimum of 20 U.S. and 30 Brazilian undergraduate students over a period of three years.

In UT Austin, the program is sponsored by the UT Environmental Science Institute and the Institute of Latin American Studies.
