The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science degree plan provides the broad foundation necessary to pursue a career and/or graduate study in environmental science and related fields such as natural sciences, geosciences, global change, and conservation.
This interdisciplinary degree plan has three tracks to choose from: Geological Sciences, Biological Sciences, or Geographical Sciences. Students in this major are offered a breadth of training in earth science, life science, geography, economics, sustainability and environmental policy, climate, research methods, and field applications.
During the first two years in the program, students take the science core courses (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Sciences, Geological Sciences, Geographic Information Systems), and also move through the following sequence:
Semester 1: An introductory course providing a broad overview to key issues,
Semester 2: An environmental science field seminar featuring top faculty in environmental science, field experiences, and research approaches in different disciplines,
Semester 3: A research methods course, preparing students for a capstone research experience as well as for all other science courses.
Students choose from among Biological Sciences, Geological Sciences, and Geography tracks after their third semester, and follow this track of while experiencing a second academic home.
During their senior year, students will take a sequence of a professional development seminar and a capstone research experience, culminating in a campus-wide seminar in which all Environmental Science seniors present on their research.
